Huron County Board of Mental Health and Addiction Services is increasing its community outreach

Norwalk Reflector - 6/26/2020

Jun. 26--NORWALK -- Huron County Board of Mental Health and Addiction Services is increasing its community outreach and its ability to provide resources to the county.

Huron County Board of Mental Health and Addiction Services (MHAS) is implementing new strategies of community outreach from video discussions, resource bags and newsletters. In addition to this, outreach events are planned and more ideas are being developed.

On July 8 and 9, MHAS will offer "Mental Health and Addiction in the Workplace" seminar to employers in Huron County. The seminar was planned in collaboration with Huron County Development Council, the Chamber of Commerce and Huron County Department of Job and Family Services.

"We're able to get a lot of information and resources to students, but how do we reach the parents? Doing this workplace seminar to bring employers to the table to say, here's the importance of addressing mental health and addiction in the workplace," Cardone said. "Just having a discussion around what do you see as being needs? And how can we help you with that."

MHAS hopes to educate employers on the importance of addressing mental health and addiction in the workplace, provide employees with resources available and begin a conversation on how to help those in need.

Employers, churches or county employees may also request a free virtual lunch and learn through MHAS.

"The goal of that is to have a one-hour training that will be lead by our contracted agencies on a wide variety of topics," she said. "If they are interested, anyone throughout the county can contact us and we can get those scheduled for them."

The Chamber of Commerce is also working with MHAS on multiple ways to engage the community and provide resources and information at events.

In the development stages are a virtual health fair, and sharing personal testimonies of recovery in the county.

Let's Get Real, a recovery and peer support organization, will host a mental health and addiction awareness event in Norwalk. Held at Veteran's Memorial Lake Park at 10 a.m.July 18 to provide resources and support to local residents.

There will be multiple agencies and organizations with resource tables, a panel discussion with individuals in recovery and attendees will be entered into a raffle to win prizes. This event is open to the public and everyone who is able is encouraged to attend.
